Eira ~~ Sixth square in the series "In Love With Granny"

Hello yarnians, welcome again..!!

If you are following me or my series, you must have noticed that I have crossed my deadline to publish the sixth square by 15 days..!! This is due to some unavoidable personal reasons and I apologies for the same.

Though we do not have very harsh winters here in India, this year we are witnessing a sharp dip in the mercury. So weather is nice – cold & chilly. This is also the most pleasant time of the year, at least for me.

In my region, a festival named “Makar Sakranti” is celebrated which marks the first day of the sun's transit into Makara (Capricorn), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer day. Various regions have various names for this festival.  It is celebrated with enthusiasm, some social festivities associated with Makar Sakranti are kite flying, sesame laddoo making.

Now coming back to our business (of course crochet business I mean ☺️) we have already completed 5 squares from our series of squares, “In Love With Granny”, collection of modern granny squares with some twists & turns.

In each square, I have attempted a crochet technique which I had not done earlier so going with the tradition, I tried fair isle crochet technique (just 3 rows..!!), This technique (particularly famous in knitting than crochet) is similar to tapestry crochet where designs is obtained by changing color multiple times.

I have changed colors in Row 26 to Row 28 also single crochet stitches are worked in between the two strands of a stitch of the previous round (instead of the loops), if you are not comfortable with this type of working you may simply choose to crochet sc (either through back loops or through both the loops depending on your comfort with same color or by changing colors) . After all crochet is all about happiness.

So here we go, presenting Sixth Square, “Eira”. Eira is as usual 10’’ square made in fingering weight yarn made in 29 rounds and with same final stitch count.  A perfect  weekend project..!!

I just forgot to mention why I named this square as Eira, Eira means Goddess Saraswati (goddess of wisdom) in Indian mythology, the name also means “the Earth” in Sanskrit (ancient Indian language), and for me Blooms represents earth that is why Eira is floral inspired block with earthy colorway.

Material Required:

Your favorite yarn and a matching hook, I used 3 mm hook with fingering weight yarn

Tapestry needle to weave in the ends

PC (Popcorn) – Work 4 dc's in the st/sp indiacted, drop the loop, insert hook in the first at (front to back), grab the dropped loop, pull through the first st, ch1 to close the st.

Fphtr – Yo twice, insert hook around the st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through 2 loops, YO and draw through all three loops.

YO6 Treble – YO 6 times, insert hook in st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (8 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through 2 loops on the hook ) × 7 times.

Puff St – (YO and pull up a loop) × 4 times, YO and draw through all the loops on the hook.

Mini Puff St – (YO and pull up a loop) × 3 times, YO and draw through all the loops on the hook.

Tr3tog – (YO twice, insert hook in the st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through 2 loops) × twice) × 3 times, (4 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through all the loops on the hook).

Fpdc2tog – (YO, insert hook around the st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through 2 loops) × 2 times, (3 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through all the loops on the hook).

Tr6tog – (YO twice, insert hook in the st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through 2 loops) × twice) × 6 times, (7 loops on the hook), (YO and draw through all the loops on the hook), ch1 to close.

HHDC (Herringbone Half Double Crochet) – (YO, insert hook in the indicated st, YO and pull up a loop, (3 loops on the hook), pull through one loop, (YO and draw through all the loops on the hook)

Colorway:

I have used yarn from my stash but you can use as many colours as possible. Go wild with your imagination. If you want to know more about color pallets do read THIS POST.

In most of the rounds I start by saying, start your round with standing st and the position where the stitch has to be placed; this is just a starting instruction and should not be counted as a st . Moreover, you can start the round with slip st and corresponding chains for a standing st (such as ch3 for dc, ch4 for tr and so on).

Refer chart for round 26 to round 28.

Please block your work after finishing and weaving in all the ends. This square needs to be blocked heavily otherwise it will not be flattened properly.

Instructions:

Start with double magic ring. If you are not comfortable working with MR then you may chain 4 and ss in the first ch to form a loop.

ROUND 1

Work 8 sc in the MR. Join with invisible join. ~          8 sc

ROUND 2

Start with standing sc in any st, *2 sc in a st* around. Join with invisible join.           ~ 16 sc

ROUND 3

Start with standing sc in any st, *2 sc in a st, fphtr in fl of the st one round below, skip next st* around. Join with invisible join.        ~ 16 sc, 8 fphtr

ROUND 4

Start with standing sc in fphtr *2 sc in a next 2 sts, sc in a next 2 st* around. Join with invisible join.          ~ 32 sc

ROUND 5

Start with standing sc in second sc of the 2 sc's worked in the fphtr in previous round, * 2 sc in a st, sc in a next st, fphtr around fphtr from one round below, skip next st, sc in the next st* around. Join with invisible join.            ~ 32 sc, 8 fphtr

ROUND 6

Start with standing sc in fphtr *2 sc in a next 2 sts, sc in a next 4 st* around. Join with invisible join.          ~ 48 sc

ROUND 7

Start with standing sc in second sc of the 2 sc's worked in the fphtr in previous round, * 2 sc in a st, sc in a next 3 st, fphtr around fphtr from one round below, skip next st, sc in the next st* around. Join with invisible join.      ~ 48 sc, 8 fphtr 

ROUND 8

Start with standing sc in fphtr *2 sc in a next 2 sts, sc in a next 6 st* around. Join with invisible join.          ~ 64 sc

ROUND 9

Start with standing sc in second sc of the 2 sc's worked in the fphtr in previous round, * 2 sc in a st, sc in a next 5 st, fphtr around fphtr from one round below, skip next st, sc in the next st* around. Join with invisible join.      ~ 64 sc, 8 fphtr

ROUND 10

Start with standing sc in fphtr *2 sc in a next 2 sts, sc in a next 8 st* around. Join with invisible join.          ~ 80 sc

All the sc's are worked in bl.

Start with standing tr in the sc which is worked on any fphtr from one round below, *(Tr3tog, ch1, tr3tog, ch3, tr3tog, ch1, tr3tog, ch1) in sc, skip next 5 sts, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, skip next 5 sts* around. ~ 16 tr3tog, 16 dc, 16 hdc, 16 sc, 12 ch1 sps, 4 ch3 sps

ROUND 14

Start with standing puff in the sp between last dc & first tr3tog, * puff in between last dc & first tr3tog, fpdc around tr3tog, puff in between next 2 tr3tog’s, fpdc around next tr3tog, (puff, ch3, puff) in ch2 sp, fpdc around next tr3tog, puff in between next 2 tr3tog’s, fpdc around next tr3tog, puff in between last tr3tog & first dc, fpdc around next 4 STS, fptr around fphtr from 2 round below (round 11), skip next St, fphdc around next 2 St, fptr around same fphtr from round 11, skip next st, fpdc around next 4 sts * around. Start with standing dc in the sp between fpdc worked around 2nd tr3tog & puff, * pc in the sp between fpdc & puff, 3 pc in ch3 sp, pc in the sp between puff & fpdc, (dc in between fpdc & puff, fpdc around puff/fpdc)× 3 times, dc in between puff & fpdc, fptr around fptr, 7 tr in between two fphdc's, fptr around fptr, dc in between fpdc & puff, (fpdc around puff, dc in between puff & fpdc/puff) × 3 times * around.                       ~ 20 pc sts, 8 fptr, 28 tr, 32 dc, 24 fpdc

ROUND 16

Start with standing fpdc around fpdc,* fpdc around fpdc, ch1, (skip next St, mini puff in between 2 puffs) × 6 times, skip next St, ch1, fpdc around last fpdc, YO6 treble around fpdc, skip next St, fpdc around next 6 sts, ( fpdc around pc, ch1) × 4 times, fpdc around pc, fpdc around next 6 sts, YO6 treble around fpdc* around.                        ~ 24 mini puffs, 2 ch1 sps, 8 YO6 treble sts, 76 fpdc

ROUND 17

Start with standing fpdc around any puff, *(fpdc around puff, ch1) × 5 times, fpdc around puff, fpdc2tog around next fpdc and fptrtr treble, ch6, bpsc in the legs of the centre pc of round 15 (back side of the work), ch6, fpdc2tog around fptrtr treble and fpdc* around. ~ 24 fpdc, 20 ch1 sps, 8 fpdc2tog, 8 ch6 sps, 4 bpsc

ROUND 18

Start with standing fpdc around first fpdc2tog, *fpdc around fpdc2tog, 4dc-pc in the sp between fpdc2tog & fpdc, ch1, (skip next st, 4dc-pc st in the ch1 sp, ch1) × 5 times, skip next st, 4dc-pc in the sp between last fpdc & fpdc2tog, fpdc around next fpdc2tog, 5 sc in the ch6 sp, fpsc around bpsc, 5 sc in the next ch6 sp* around. Join with ss in the first st made.        ~ 28 pc, 24 ch1 sps, 8 fpdc, 40 sc, 4 fpsc

ROUND 19

Start with standing fpdc around first fpdc, * fptr around fpdc, (fptr around pc, tr in ch1 sp) × 3 times, fptr around pc, Ch2, fptr around same pc, (tr in the ch1 sp, fptr around pc ) × 3 times, fptr around last fpdc, fpdc in the next 3 sts, fphdc in the next 5 sts, fpdc in the next 3 sts* around. Join with ss in the first st made.    ~ 40 fptr, 24 tr, 20 fphdc, 24 fpdc, 4 ch2 sps

ROUND 20

Start with standing hdc in any ch2 sp, *(2 hdc, ch2, 2 hdc) in ch2 sp, fpdc around next 7 sts, fphdc around next 13 sts, fpdc around next 7 sts * around. Join with ss in the first st made.         ~ 16 hdc, 52 fphdc, 56 fpdc, 4 ch2 sps

ROUND 21

Start with standing dc in any ch2 sp, *(dc, ch2, dc) in ch2 sp, 2 dc in next 2 sts, mini puff in the sp between hdc & fpdc, (skip next st, mini puff in the sp between 2 sts) × 26 times, mini puff in between fpdc & dc, 2 dc in next 2 sts* around. Join with ss in the first st made.  ~ 112 mini puff sts, 40 dc, 4 ch2 sps.             ~ 112 mini puff sts, 40 dc, 4 ch2 sps

ROUND 22

Start with standing fpdc around first mini puff after dc's, * fpdc around next 28 sts, bpdc around next 5 sts, ch1, tr4tog in ch2 sp from round 20 , ch1, bpdc around next 5 sts* around. Join with ss in the first st made.                        ~ 112 fpdc, 40 bpdc, 8 ch1 sps, 4 tr4tog

ROUND 23

Start with standing bpdc around first st after ch1 sp, * bpdc around each st aross, (htr, ch2, htr) in the ch2 sp from round 21* around. Join with ss in the first st made.       ~ 152 bpdc, 8 htr, 4 ch2 sps

ROUND 24 

Start with standing bpdc around first st after ch2 sp, *bpdc around each st across, fphtr around tr4tog from round 22, ch2, fphtr around same tr4tog* around. Join with ss in the first st made.  ~ 160 bpdc, 8 fphtr, 4 ch2 sps

ROUND 25

Start with standing bpdc around first st after ch1 sp, * fphdc around next 20 sts, fphdc2tog around next 2 sts, fphdc around next 20 sts, (hdc, ch2, hdc) in the ch2 sp from round 21* around. Join with ss in the first st made.  ~ 160 fphdc, 4 fpdc2tog, 8 hdc, 4 ch2 sps

ROUND 26

Start with standing sc in any ch2 sp, * (ch1, puff in the ch2 sp of round 24, ch1) in ch2 sp, sc in each sc* around. Join with ss in the first st made.        ~ 172 sc, 8 ch1 sps, 4 puff sts

ROUND 27

Start with standing sc in any ch1 sp, * 2 sc in ch1 sp, ch2, 2 sc in next ch1 sp, sc in each sc (not through the loops but in between the 2 strands of the st) * around. Join with ss in the first st made.       ~ 188 sc, 4 ch2 sps
